William and Mary, The Battle of La Hogue, 1692The Battle of La Hogue was part of the Nine Years’ War and took place on 29th May 1692 near Barfleur. An Anglo-Dutch fleet commanded by Edward Russell and Philips van Almonde clashed against a French fleet lead by Anne Hilarion de Tourville that was preparing to transport an invading army of Franco-Irish troops to restore James II to the English throne. The French offered stubborn resistance, but were scattered. Some escaped, but three groups were driven onto the French coast and destroyed. De Tourville’s flagship the Soleil Royale and twelve other ships were burnt.
