King George III married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 8 September 1761. They met for the first time on their wedding day and despite the last minute introduction they remained happily married and had 15 children. The greatest strain on their relationship was George’s bouts of mental illness but whilst this proved to be distressing to Charlotte she remained supportive of her husband.
