James I, Henry, Prince of Wales Silver Medal, 1612Henry Frederick Stuart was the eldest son of James I. He was a promising heir to his father’s throne, excelling himself at sport, military, naval and diplomatic affairs. He died from typhoid fever at the age of 18 on the 6th November 1612. His younger brother Charles went on to be king in 1625 and his reign failed to achieve harmony between the monarchy, parliament and the church, which led the country on a road to war and ultimately the execution of Charles. Had Prince Henry survived his illness, England may have had a more peaceful future in the hands of a man better suited to the throne.
