Alfred the Great, Penny, 871-899Accompanied by three collectors tickets including one from Baldwin’s stock in 1961.

The impressive Londonia monogram of the coins reverse is clearly of greater significance than the mint names and symbols that are usually seen on Anglo-Saxon pennies. Alfred’s reign was contested on many occasions by invading Danish armies including aggressive Viking raids on London. The coin’s design shows the pride and importance of Alfred’s occupation of London that occurred around eight years into his reign and may also link to the restoration of the city after a Viking raid in 885.
