Henry I, Penny, 1125-35Henry I was the first monarch to establish a mint at Carlisle and was also responsible for many developments to the city. Henry gave extensive donations to the church during the later years of his reign that saw the creation of a number of ecclesiastical buildings. Henry gave his permission for the foundation of a priory in Carlisle in 1122 that became Carlisle Cathedral in 1133 when the town gained the status of a diocese.
