Barcelona was occupied by an English-led Allied army in 1705. This medal commemorates an event the following year in 1706 when a Franco-Spanish army led by Philip V attempted to recapture the city. The siege was hardly underway when English reinforcements arrived under the command of John Leake. The scale of the English fleet led to a hurried retreat by the Franco-Spanish army who abandoned a great deal of artillery and supplies in the process
