This portrait is taken from a painting of Charles I by Anthony van Dyke in the mid 1630’s. It can currently be viewed at the National Portrait Gallery in London. The only notable alteration from the painting is the removal of the Order of the Garter on Charles’s cloak.
Examples of this medal that feature a reverse are created by joining two thin embossed plates together. Examples such as this one that were not attached to a reverse were filled to create a more substantial uniface medal. This medal appears to be filled with lead whilst an example at the British Museum is filled with red wax.
