Edward the Elder, Penny, 899-924Flower type pennies are one of the most sought after issues of the tenth century. The extremely rare ornamental plant stands out as a pleasing aesthetic amongst the more commonly encountered two-line and portrait issues from the period. This example of the type is of particular interest as it is one of only three known Viking imitations of a flower penny. The coin can be clearly identified as a Viking variety by the retrograde moneyer’s name and crude engraving. On further examination the coin is also more than 10% lighter than regal issues, which is in keeping with other Viking pennies from the period.
