Charles attempted to obtain the English throne by first securing the Scottish throne. To achieve his goal he reluctantly accepted the Protestant “Deed of Covenant” which prevented a monarchs intervention in religion and rejected Catholicism. Charles was crowned King of Scotland on 1st January 1651. This was the last coronation on Scottish soil.
