At the beginning of the Civil War the royalist county of Cornwall was isolated from the rest of England by the predominantly Parliamentarian Devon. Following a successful campaign, Prince Maurice captured Exeter for the king on 4 September 1643 and Sir Richard Vyvyan rapidly transferred his mint establishment to the larger city. Vyvyan himself was made a freeman of Exeter on 2 October 1643.
